Childhood & Cricket

Born on July 7th 1981 in Ranchi, Dhoni was a brilliant child in sports like badminton and football, but his coach had other ideas. His coach saw his potential as a goalkeeper and turned his goalkeeping skills into wicket keeping. He was a big fan of Adam Gilchrist and his inspirations were his cricketing teammate Sachin Tendulkar, bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Entrance into Ranji Trophy

After playing a lot of cricket in his his early teenage,he decided what is going to be his future goal. He showed lot of interest in cricket and shocked everybody by his wicket keeping. Later he made his Ranji debut in 1999 - 2000

India A team

He performed really well in the Ranji trophy and was reconized by the BCCI and was selected for the India A team in 2003 for an ODI series against Zimbabwe. He scored back to back centuries in that series and totally scored 332 runs in 6 innings averaging at around 72.4. Soon he grabbed the attention of the Indian captian Sourav Ganguly.

Debut in International Cricket

He made his international debut against Bangladesh in 2004, where he was run out for a golden duck, which would be considered as the worst starts for a career. He did not perform well in that series, but still he was selected for the series against Pakistan. Thanks to Ganguly, who sent Dhoni up the order at number 3 where he scored his maiden ODI century which led his team to a victory. He surprised everybody by scoring 148 of just 123 balls which was the highest score by an Indian wicket keeper

His memorable knock of 183*

In a bilteral ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2005, India had tochase a target of 299. India lost Tendulkar and early and Dhoni was sent at number 3 once again. Dhoni utilized the opportunity and scored an unbeaten 183, which is the highest runs scored by a wicket keeper till date.

Dhoni's Test Debut

Dhoni made his international test debut in 2005against Sri Lanka in Chennai. He marked his first red ball cricket with just a 30 runs in the first innings, and taking a catch to dismiss Avishka Gunawardene.

ICC T20 Trophy (2007)

ICC announced for the T20 trophy in 2007where the BCCI decided to give rest to all the senior players during this time and Dhoni was given the responsibility to lead the team with a a bunch of young players. This was a tough task for Dhoni as India was alreadydisappointed after losing the World Cup (50 over format) in the very first round against Bangladesh.Dhoni was out for a duck in this match, his house in Ranchi which was under construction was burnt by people. He played good knocks and impressed everyone by his captiancy. He led his team to the finals against Pakistan, leavingall the experienced teams behind. In the finals against Pakistan India won by 5 runs and was the first team to claim the T20World Cup. People all around the world were shocked, seeing a young inexperienced Indian team win the very first edition of the T20 World Cup.

Dhoni's first International Wicket

Dhoni was not only an excellent keeper - batsman, but also showcased his brlliance in bowling. He pulled off his gloves and took the ball in his hand and bolwed out the Caribbean batsman Travis Dowlin of the very first delivery he bowled in ODI. His first test wicket was of the legendary English batsman Kevin Pietersen.

ICC World Cup (2011)

After the retirement of Sourav Ganguly in 2008, Dhoni was announced as the captain of the Indian cricket team in all formats of the game. He one more got an opportunity to lead his team in the World Cup, but this time with all the senior players. Like before even this time Dhoni led his team to the finals against Sri Lanka in the Wankhede stadium, Mumbai. Sri Lanka put 275 on the board, and India had to chase it down to win the world cup. It was a tough start for the team with Sehwag and Sachin coming back to the pavilion in quick succession. Gautam Gambhir played a good knock of 97, but it was not enough. Dhoni comes up the order instead of Yuvraj and played a blinder of 91, which helped India win the World Cup after 28 years. India was the first team to win the world cup as hosts. This world cup victory was MSD's turning point where he became popular as a finsher and an excellent captain.

ICC Champions Trophy (2013)

In 2013 the champions was to take place in England as a 20 over format. The Indian cricket team and the Indian fans were pretty relaxed with the way of performance of the cricketers and especially with Dhoni's captiancy. As always Dhoni led his team from the front taking them to yet another finals against England. It was not easy this time as it was the hosts taking over India. It was a tough luck for India as they scored just 129 runs in 20 overs with a loss of 7 wickets. There was a huge responsibility on the bowlers. Dhoni used the spiners smartly and led India to yet another victory. On that day Dhoni became the first and only captain till date to claim all the ICC trophies.

IPL and CSK

In 2008 the auctions were held for the first edition of the IPL. As Dhoni was the wining captain of the 2007 T20 world cup, he was in very much demand in the auction. He was sold for the Chennai Super Kings for 11.3 crores. He played a major role for CSK's success in the IPL. He has been in the CSK squad since the very first edition of the IPL till date (except for 2016 & 2017 as the franchise was banned due to certain reasons). Undoubtedly he is also among the most successful captains in the IPL. He took CSK to the playoffs 10 times, 8 times to the finale and wining the trophy 3 times out of 11 seasons played. Also CSK won the champions league for 2 times under the captiancy of Dhoni.
